Green Poverty Alleviation Project Approved


July 18, 2006 UNDP funded ^Green Poverty Alleviation in Poor Rural Areas of China  ̄ project was signed and approved by CICETE, MOST and UNDP. This project is aimed to help poor rual areas, with priority given to the western region inhabited by ethnic minorities, combine rural poverty alleviation with eco-environment protection and energy development to provide the basis for future sustainable development. Three pilot projects will be carried out in the next 3 years, including:
1)planting of Jatropha Curcas tree in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan in order to provide a feedstock for bio-diesel production;
2) planting of Jarrah Dayun in Hetain, Xinjiang for raw material of traditional medicine;
3) Application of small-scale wind turbines for poor herdsmen in Inner Mongolia.
