Ms. Dana de Kanter, the Executive Director of the Small Enterprise
Education and Promotion Network (SEEP), was invited by UNDP and
CICETE to work as the consultant for the China microfinance association
(MFA) from January 25, 2005 to February 3, 2005. Her mission was
to visit relevant organizations such as international donors and
Chinese governors from the People's bank of China, thd and China
Banking Regulatory Committee, microfinance practitioners, and investors
or organizations who have interests in the sector, make suggestions
on the setup of the MFA, and help the pioneers initiating the MFA,
including CICETE, design the MFA organizational structure according
to the background of the development of Chinese microfinance. As
scheduled, Ms. Kanter presented a lecture on the international MFA
experience on February 3 at CICETE. Representatives from more than
16 organizations such as CICETE, UNDP, CASS, World Bank, Ford Foundation,
Poverty Alleviation Office of the State Council, etc. attended the
workshop. Ms. Kanter answered questions raised by participants and
made conclusion on her findings in China and provided suggestions
to the Chinese practitioners on the setup of a MFA. Ms. Kanter will
deliver to CICETE in March the mission report of her trip to China
regarding the suggestions of the setup of the China MFA in March.
