The new central government has set the goal of building a well-off
(Xiao Kang) society in all-round way in China after the 16th Congress.
The national economy was booming at the start of the year, although
the growth slowed down by the outbreak of SARS. The economy, with
growth rates of 8%, continues to be the "star performer"
in an otherwise subdued world economy. However, facing the new situation
of China's entry into the WTO and the outbreak of SARS in this spring,
many in-depth problems, such as in-depth reform of state-owned banks,
reform of management of state-owned assets, public administration
and disaster economy, and unemployment and rural surplus labor force,
still exist and need to be resolved urgently. In addition, the new
central government has put forward the strategy for revitalizing
the economy of the Northeast China, and signed the Closer Economic
Partnership Agreements (CEPA) with Hong Kong, which, while providing
opportunities for further development, need to be promptly materialized
into detailed implementation activities by the public and industry
community.
In view of the above-mentioned points, the Fifth China Economist
Forum-International Symposium on Economic and Social Analysis and
Forecast is planned to be held in the People's Great Hall, Beijing,
from December7th to 9th, 2003. Relevant state leaders, officials
from relevant ministries, economists home and abroad and entrepreneurs
will be present at the meeting. A series of recommendations on solutions
to the above-mentioned issues will be proposed, so as to contribute
to ensure the sustainable, stable and sound development of the Chinese
economy.
The meeting will be jointly held by Departments of Development
Strategy and Regional Economic Research of the Development Research
Center, the State Council, the Chinese Economy Analysis and Forecast
Center of Chinese Academy of Social Science, and the China International
Center for Economic & Technical Exchanges of Ministry of Commerce.
